My name is Dawn Priest, I am the Assistant Cheer Director for the North Middlesex AYF/AYC program. I am happy to answer any questions that you have about our Contender division cheer squad. For starters, my plan is that we will practice one night a week for approximately 2 hours. Obviously, this may be modified based upon the tolerance of the particpants. Games are typically on Sundays. The season starts the first week of August with practices, and runs through October. The Contender division does also participate in all cheer competitions, and has the potential to compete at Nationals in Florida in December depending on placement at prior competitions. Prior to competition, we may have an additional night of practice. All cheerleaders will be expeceted to participate to their level of ability in fundraising for the program and the Kraft Huddle to Fight Hunger, as well as one fundraising event to raise money for the Special Olympics.

I will be coaching the Contender division this year, and I am very excited about it! I have been involved in coaching cheer for many years, and in 2011 was lucky enough to accompany my division 15 squad to Nationals! In addition to being a coach, I am a mother with a little boy who has FG Syndrome and Autism, so bringing this new division to our program is just so exciting for me. I also substitute teach special education, so I have been exposed to a variety of different ability ranges. At the end of the day, this program is about teaching teamwork, building confidence and having fun!

I am working on putting together a short information form for parents to fill out relative to their child’s strengths, areas where more assistance is needed, and things to avoid. I will be working closely with parents to make sure that all of the participants needs are met and that all of the children are comfortable at all times. We welcome ALL children who wish to participate regardless of their ability level.

Please don’t hestiate to contact me with any questions. I want to make sure everyone is completely comfortable with the program, including a meet and greet with you and your child.
